SF6 Where and How Is SF6 Used?
SF6 is used as an insulating gas in substations, as an insulating and cooling medium in transformers and as an insulating and arc quenching medium in switchgear for high and medium voltage applications. These are all closed systems which are extremely safe and unlikely to leak.
In electrical power systems, high and medium voltage switchgear is required to cut off the power in case of a fault, in order to protect people and equipment. Breakers filled with SF6 are electrically insulating and effectively control arcing.

F6 also is used in other ways. Mixed with argon, it can be used in insulated windows. SF6 is used in the metal industry, for example, when casting magnesium. Eye surgeons use SF6 as a cooling agent in operations. SF6 can also be used as a fire extinguishing agent because it is non-flammable and cooling.
In electrical applications, SF6 is only used in sealed and safe systems which under normal circumstances do not leak gas.
SF6 is collected and recycled if a piece of equipment or a substation needs to be opened.

What Is the Benefit of SF6?
There are two reasons for using SF6 in electrical equipment:
SF6 provides extremely good electrical insulation and very effectively quenches electric arcs. These properties of SF6 make it possible to build electrical equipment and apparatus that are compact, use a small amount of material, are safe and will last a long time. At normal atmospheric pressure, SF6 has a dielectric withstand capability that is 2.5 times better than air. Usually the gas is used at 3-5 times atmospheric pressure and then the dielectric properties are ten times better than for air.
SF6 insulates so well because it is strongly electronegative. This means that the gas molecules catch free electrons and build heavy negative ions, which do not move fast. This is effective against the creation of electron avalanches which may lead to flashovers.
SF6 effectively controls circuit-breaker arcs because it has excellent cooling properties at temperatures (1500-5000 K) at which the arcs extinguish (the gas uses energy when it dissociates and therefore produces a cooling effect).
High-voltage switchgear with SF6 is in principle alone on the market and the volume of medium-voltage switchgear with SF6 is large. Complete gas insulated substations, GIS or RMU, are used where space is restricted or the environment is severe. They are virtually maintenance-free. Electrical equipment filled with SF6 has been in use for about 40 years and the service experience is very good.
SF6 has a very high dielectric withstand capability.
SF6 effectively quenches arcs in circuit breakers.
SF6 apparatus is compact and almost maintenance-free.
SF6 equipment is extremely safe in operation and for users.

Are there Any Alternatives to SF6?
High-voltage circuit breakers filled with SF6 are able to cope with higher unit voltage than any other technique. Therefore, SF6 circuit breakers require fewer breaking units in series than air or oil-filled breakers. SF6 circuit breakers for medium voltage have considerable advantages compared to the alternatives. SF6 substations can be built as totally closed systems which provide the highest levels of operational and user safety.
The designs require only little material; all SF6 apparatus are compact. Compared with electrical apparatus without SF6, the environmental impact is low. Especially if you take into consideration every environmental impact “from the cradle to the grave“, that is, from manufacturing, installation, operation and maintenance all the way to final scrapping (when scrapping equipment , all the SF6 is recovered). So SF6 has many important advantages while currently available alternatives represent a return to older and inferior technology.
Without SF6, we would have a bigger impact on the environment as the alternatives require more space, are less safe and affect the environment more for installers, service personnel and people who live in the area.

IF5,Lodine Pentafluoride is a fluoride of iodine. It is a colourless or yellow liquid with a density of 3250 kg m−3. It was first synthesized by Henri Moissan in 1891 by burning solid iodine in fluorine gas.[2] This exothermic reaction is still used to produce iodine pentafluoride, although the reaction conditions have been improved.[3][4]
I2 + 5 F2 → 2 IF5
Chemistry
Iodine pentafluoride is a strong fluorination agent and is highly oxidative. It reacts vigorously with water forming hydrofluoric acid.
Primary amines react with iodine pentafluoride forming nitriles after hydrolysis with water.[5]
R-CH2-NH2 → R-CN

Sulphur hexafluoride. SF6 is a gas that is used in electrical power equipment. It is colourless, odourless, non-flammable and chemically stable. This means that at room temperature it does not react with any other substance. Stability comes from the symmetrical arrangement of the six fluorine atoms around the central sulphur atom. And this stability is just what makes the gas useful in electric equipment. SF6 is a very good electrical insulator and can effectively extinguish arcs, which makes high and medium voltage apparatus filled with SF6 highly popular. SF6 can be found in millions of electric apparatus all over the world; electrical equipment containing SF6 is a large export article.
SF6 is formed by a chemical reaction between molten sulphur and fluorine. Fluorine is obtained by the electrolysis of hydrofluoric acid (HF).
Pure SF6 is not poisonous. The gas is not dangerous to inhale, provided the oxygen content is high enough. In principle you can inhale a mixture of 20% oxygen and 80% SF6 without danger. SF6 is about 6 times heavier than air. That means that it may collect in cable ducts or at the bottom of tanks. The gas is not dangerous to inhale but if it does accumulate where people work, there is a risk of suffocation due to the lack of oxygen.

Fluorine: Fluorine(F2)is a basic element with the Atomic Number of 9, and Atomic Weight of 18.998. It is found in nature in the mineral know as Fluorspar and in the combined state constitutes about 0.078% of the earths crust. Fluorine is the most reactive element of the Halogens group in the Periodic Chart.

Fluorspar has been used to make other fluorine containing chemical compounds since the 16th century. In the 18th century, sulfuric acid was first used to extract fluorine from fluorspar to make Hydrofluoric Acid. Since that time Hydrofluoric Acid (HF), has been used to be the primary intermediate chemical in processes in making other fluorine containing chemical compounds, including a large variety of fluorocarbon compounds. This chemical conversion process in commonly called Hydrofluorination. There are now several commercial manufacturers and suppliers in the U.S.A. of Anhydrous Hydrofluoric Acid for industrial customers and technical grades for laboratories, etc.

There are a large number recently developed fluorine containing chemical compounds where intermediate fluorine compounds are used in the process to form the new chemical compound. These processes are referred to as Intermediate - Fluorination processes.

Only in the last century has the isolation of pure elemental fluorine gas been commercially available. That process of isolation of Fluorine is by "Electrolytic separation" of Anhydrous Hydrofluoric Acid into Hydrogen Gas and Fluorine Gas(F2). This process occurs in what is called a Fluorine Electrolytic Cell. The Cell contains a molten fluorine salt compound with Hydrofluoric Acid as the electrolyte in the cell. When electrically charged with DC current across the submerged anodes and cathodes in the cell, the Hydrogen gas is released from the cathode and Fluorine Gas is released from the Anode each in separate gas chambers in the cell.

There are a large number of fluorine containing chemical compounds recently developed that can only be formed by processing the base chemical compound with some form of elemental fluorine gas. This chemical process is referred to as Fluorination. Fluorine gas is also used in the process of surface conditioning on various Hydrocarbon plastic containers, etc. for solvent and fuel storage. More recently, pure fluorine gas is being used to surface clean and treat components in the semiconductor industry.

There are several companies in the United States that commercially produce Fluorine gas for customers. Gaseous elemental fluorine stored under pressure has a very high risk level for accidental fires. Compressed gas cylinders of Fluorine Gas are most commonly sold commercially in a mixture with other inert gases in concentrations less that 20% fluorine. For those industries that need pure elemental fluorine in their processes or need large quantities of fluorine, the "safest and most economical method" of obtaining Fluorine gas is to obtain and operate a "Fluorine Gas Generation System", that produces fluorine on demand with very limited surge capacity storage between the generation system and the system that uses the fluorine gas(F2).

Chemical Analyzer

NIR analysers are available in four wavelength configurations to give complete coverage of the NIR region. Covering the entire wavelength range is vital for accurate results
The chemical analyzer can scan the NIR region up to 2500nm. This allows calibrations and databases from monochromator based systems of Bran+Luebbe, NIRSystems, Foss, Bruker, ABB Bomem, and Thermo.
This chemical analyzer can also scan the wavelength range of 1200-2400 nm. This wavelength range covers the same range used by older NIR filter spectrometers from Technicon, Bran+Luebbe, Perten, and DICKEY-john, meaning that calibrations from these systems can easily be transferred to other spectrometers or chemical analyzers.
The NIR (Near Infrared) analyzer is the latest technology for analyzing solid and liquid chemical and pharmaceutical formulations. The patented design of NIR offers high analytical performance with better sensitivity and precise instrument matching to enhance method development, minimize implementation time and promise seamless method transferability.

How to Choose Herbicides

Herbicides are effective in killing plants or restraining their growth. The means of herbicides in doing this differs because of the many processes needed to plant life. These chemicals are usually effective when used with proper cultural practiced in a weed management program. The option of the most effective specific mixture differs with economical, ecological and agronomic factors.
Herbicides have two types, depending on their effects on plants. These types include selective and non-selective. Selective herbicides are those that stunt or kill weeds in turf grasses without causing too much harm. On the other hand, non-selective herbicides damage or kill all plants when used adequately. However, in certain situations, non-selective herbicides can act selectively if there is an excessive application and a selective herbicide can be phytotoxic. As a result, selectivity is one property of the treatment type as well as the chemical, which is regulated by different factors including the ways of application, time, environment conditions, chemical formulation, the stages of weed and turf grass growth and the dosage.
Herbicides can kill weeds such as dandelions, crabgrass and other unnecessary grasses that can damage your garden and lawn. Certain herbicides are manufactured for specific weeds while there are others that can treat a wide range of problems. It is necessary to apply herbicides safely and accurately in order to prevent damage in your lawn and plants and to avoid wasting the product, which is usually expensive. In addition, the exposure of children and pets to herbicides must be avoided because it may cause harmful reaction to the body. Make sure to follow the steps properly in applying herbicide.
The first thing you need to remember is to choose a good quality herbicide sprayer that has an adjustable nozzle. Usually, pump sprayers are available in one and two-gallon sizes, which can be purchased in hardware shops, nurseries and home supply stores. Choose a pump sprayer that can be easily lifted when full.
You have to determine the size of the area you have to treat so that you can identify the amount of herbicide you need to prepare. Remember that depending on the size of your sprayer, you may need to prepare more than one batch to treat the whole area.
Make sure to read the label of the herbicide carefully, especially the emergency instructions. Though t is necessary to know the mixture of the right amount and the number of times of application, you also need to know what you have to do if ever the chemical comes in contact with your skin or eyes. When applying chemicals, it is important to wear proper clothing such as long-sleeved shirt, long pants and a hat. Gloves are needed to protect your hands and shoes to protect your feet.
According to the instructions given, mix the herbicide and spray on the weeds directly and thoroughly. Make sure to avoid applying herbicide on your garden plants for it may damage or kill them. It is better to choose granule or powder herbicides that can be combined with fertilizers and other kinds of treatments. These herbicides have longer effects and are safer to use. You also have an option to use organic herbicides that are friendlier to the environment.

Hello my wonderful readers, it's your "Organic Gardening Enthusiast" once again with more wonderful information about Organic Gardening Fertilizer, Compost.
Can one use grass clippings in organic gardening compost if the grass has been treated with fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides? When is this safe and when is it unsafe?
The issue we'll deal with first is the question about commercial fertilizer. This fertilizer is made up of chemicals and minerals and these in themselves are not necessarily harmful to our compost. The greatest concern concerning commercial chemical fertilizers is that it requires a great deal of petroleum to make and a huge result of the output of this manufacturing process is the tremendous amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the air. This is neither helpful for our compost, organic vegetable garden nor the very air that we all breathe.
As to using grass clippings that have been fertilized with commercial or chemical fertilizers we need to look at what actually happens when this type of fertilizer is used. After these commercial and chemical fertilizers are spread on the grass one usually waters their lawn, the water dissolves these chemicals and the roots of the grass absorb the water and the fertilizer. This is not really much different than if you had spread a thin layer of compost over your grass, or an organic grass fertilizer. The same photosynthesis is taking place. If your grass has been watered for at least 7 days the commercial and chemical fertilizer has been dissolved and the nutrients absorbed by your grass. If this was the only substance put on your grass and it's been at least a week these grass clippings will not compromise your compost and certainly can be used.
   1. In the true spirit of Organic Gardening Compost one would prefer not to use grass clippings or anything else that had been treated with a commercial or chemical fertilizer, but it is such a waste to simply put all of those grass clippings in with your refuse and send them off to the landfill.
   2. There is organic grass fertilizer. It is made up primarily of chicken droppings and the manufacturer assures us that the chickens have been fed only organic food so it rather completes the organic cycle, which is just wonderful.
As to the next part of this question, this is much more simple and at the same time complex. If the grass has been treated with pesticides and herbicides and you then introduce these grass clippings into your organic compost you run a very high risk of harming the microorganisms, insects, nematodes, the 'uncommon earthworm' and all of the other little beasties that are going to be working so hard to make your organic material into our wonderful compost.
One of the major concerns with these pesticides and herbicides is that they have a very oily texture. This oiliness allows pesticides and herbicides to stick to vegetation and the ground and perform their function. So we would say please, do not use grass clippings that have been treated with herbicides or pesticides. Again one must use common sense when dealing with these things. If the grass clippings were treated no more than 30 days ago and you can see insects and other wonderful little creatures in your grass then the effects of these poisons have probably worn off.
We are by no means advising you to use these grass clippings but you know quite well that common sense rules the garden.

Weed Killer - Selective and Non-Selective Herbicides

Weed killer is an important part of all grounds maintenance routines. The spring and summer months bring upon many unwanted weeds around desired vegetation including cropland areas and aquatic settings. Choosing the best weed killer for your specific application will ensure thorough and long lasting weed control.
Selective herbicides are used in delicate grassy areas to combat the problem of pesky weeds. Contained in their special formulas is the power to fight the toughest broadleaf weeds in lawn and ornamental turf without harming the surrounding vegetation. Selective weed killer is made for use against weeds like Dandelion, Ground Ivy, Johnsongrass, Morning Glory, Peppergrass, Poision Ivy/Oak, Primrose, Ragweed and Thistle.
Non-selective herbicides can achieve bare ground results in areas inundated with the most persistent unwanted weeds. The active ingredients in non-selective weed killers have been specially formulated to swiftly knock out the toughest perennial weeds and to prevent new weeds from growing for a long period of time. These herbicides are best for use in locations like ditches, brick paths, railroad tracks, fence rows, parking lots and patios. Some of these products only work on the plants they are sprayed on and they become inert when they come into contact with soil. Others will soak into the soil as well and prevent regrowth longer and more thoroughly.
Common weed killer ingredients include:
    * 2,4-D / 2,4-D Salts - Mimics the activity of a growth hormone inside the flora. It induces unusually speedy development which strains the life support system of the weed to a level where death takes place.
    * Bromacil - A residual weed killer which acts as a soil sterilant to prevent vegetation regrowth for a broadened time period. Acts slowly as it is channeled to the root zone by moisture and absorption.
    * Glyphosate - Enters the metabolism of the weed and suppresses its maturation. Systemic action kills the entire plant, roots and leaves. Becomes dormant upon touching soil.
    * Diquate Dibromide - Once ingested, it interrupts the photosynthesis process and kills the uninvited plant. This contact herbicide eradicates surface vegetation so replanting can take place shortly after application. Deactivates upon contact with the dirt. It can also be utilized to wipe out aquatic weeds.
    * MSMA - An active herbicide element formulated to interfere with the plants metabolism by causing excessive stress to the normal growth cycle.
    * MCPP / 2,4-DP / 2,4-D - A group of systemic weedkillers designed to kill particular broadleaf weeds. Once absorbed into the plant, they kill them by cutting off crucial metabolic processes within.
    * Prometon - Works through root and leaf absorption for "Total Kill" effects. This photosynthesis suppressing herbicide acts as a soil sterilant to contain regrowth and new seedlings.
